Hollywood gets no more of my money

February 11th, 2008 at 10:23 am

Since the beginning of 2007, I have not paid a direct penny to Hollywood. I know there's probably some money going there indirectly through advertising and such, and paying for cable. I have not paid for a movie ticket, movie rental, or DVD purchased since late 2006.

I can't remember how it all started, but I was getting fed up Hollywood and it's lack of creactivity. I'm guessing a lot of it has to do with the numerous remakes and movie adaptations of old tv shows over the last few years. I think it started with Disney's 'National Treasure.' After watching it, I realized that it was just an adult version of 'Goonies.' So Disney is recycling their plotlines.

If you watch an action/adventure movie, the movie is all graphics and horrible writing. If the movie is a comedy, all the good jokes were seen in the previews

I was fed up to the point where I was not giving Hollywood any more of my money. I stopped going to movies but others wanted to go and didn't want to go alone, so I said you can pay for me. So since then I have been treated 3 movies. I'm a cheap movie date anyways because I never grew up being accustomed to snacking while watching a movie.

I watch a alot of DVD's that I borrow from friends. With the speed that studios are putting out DVDs, you really only have to wait a few months to see a movie on DVD.

I am not opposed to going to the 'second time around' theaters where it went up to $3 from two for shows before 8pm. These are the multi-plexes that show movies that are a month or two 'old'.

Hehe, yeah! Fight the system. Big Grin

I like Red Boxes though... $0.99 per night rental is hard to pass up.... Other than that, I mostly pass up the rest for financial reasons.

i haven't been to the movies since i have seen Deathproof, which was months ago. (which, by the way, was one of the few movies i believed was worth every dollar). If I do go to the movies again, it will be on 'cheap night' where the movies are $9. Generally it costs $14.80 to see a movie these days where i am.
good on you for sticking to your decision!

I have only seen about 3 movies in the past 10 years. They were Babe(the kid movie about a pig),Forrest Gump and Titantic!!

I liked National Treasure. Both of them. Smile

Hehe. My mom took my daughter and my sister to see the Hannah Montana movie. It was my daughter's first trip to the movies, she's three and there just hasn't been anything I want to sit through and watch with her (not to mention actually pay for)

Of course, all she's talked about is going back to the movies. Luckily, there is nothing I want to see ... or anything I think is appropriate for her.

Heh-heh. The last time I was in a movie theater was May 1992.

  8. Broken Arrow Says:

Actually, I liked National Treasure as well, but to each their own.

  9. Mr. Meager Says:

Sorry if you I was misleading. I actually enjoyed National Treasure, thought it was better than Goonies, and look forward to seeing the sequel. I just thought that the plotlines were too similar. Especially (spoiler alert) at the end when they found the treasure by accident when they thought there was no treasure: just like Goonies and the boat.

What is up with $9 being a cheap night. We have a $3 cheap there here. Once and a while friends give me a dollar to my movie fund. I am up to $2, so almost there.

What I am doing more now is buying CD's online from small unkwown artist that I enjoy. I actually offer to pay more than they are asking because I know they need it.

  10. Nic Says:

Going to the movies is way too expensive. We wait for it to come out on DVD and go to Redbox.

  11. Mr. Meager Says:

I might be in conflict now that the 1982 classic "Zapped" with Scott Baio is being released on DVD today. I so love that movie.

  12. baselle Says:

I'm with you. Even the matinee isn't cheap enough. But I did see Charlie Wilson's War (like The West Wing) and I Am Legend (like Omega Man).

I wouldn't worry about Zapped. The residuals will keep Scott Baio off the streets. Think of it as your good deed of the day. Big Grin

  13. Mr. Meager Says:

I hold in my hand a burned copy of Zapped. No cost to me, and no residuals to Scott, so all hot women on the streets, beware.
