Text messaging

August 27th, 2007 at 06:44 pm

My friends think I am weird and cheap because I am planning to block all text messages from my cell account. Just because everyone is doing it, I should be on board too. I don't get enough text messages in a month to justify the unlimited plan but I do get enough at 15 cents per message to see a difference in my bill. Yeah, I am cheap about this but I don't understand why someone can't just call me for free and ask me "what's the plan tonight?"

A week ago, I lied to everyone and told them that I blocked text messages with my cell phone company and the number of messages have dropped drastically, and I don't acknowledge the ones I get.

I really think the text messaging craze is as backwards as women lying about their ages. Why are people spending more money to by fancy phones with mini-keyboards and paying extra in monthly fees to talk less and type more.

Lol, I'm doing the opposite. Hubby uses his text messages to receive and send messages during meetings. It has been awesome to finally be able to keep in contact with him instead of waiting for an all day meeting to be over to see if he can answer. And the kids send messages from college while they are waiting for classes. It is much quieter than answering the phone in the hallways. And they get messages in restaurants, etc. I am thinking of adding texting to my phone because I am the only one they can't contact. I leave my phone off a lot of times because I don't have messaging. And that frustrates a kid who needs to contact you. I might feel differently in the future, but I'm going to give it a try. If I got tons of messages I don't need, then I could definitely see your point.Or just a few and won't justify the expense.

I love text messages, if not for it I would go over my minutes by way more than the amount I pay for a text messaging bundle. However, I try to be courteous and not text anyone that I know doesn't text that way I'm not making them pay for something they don't want. Good for you blocking it!

Do you guys pay to read text messages? I'm confused. We only pay when we send text here in Australia.

Depends on the phone plan... I have unlimited for only $9.99 per month. That is both sending and recieving.

    I am glad I don't even have a phone!

It's just a fad. It takes twice as long to text message as to talk. It's a mystery to me why it's so popular.

Fern - I am Deaf so text messaging is a must for me. If it was not for text messaging, I would not have the ability to contact my friends unless I drove all the way home to get on a device machine that contacts a relay operator who talks for me while I type out a message. Its so impersonal and makes me cast away from the general public. I am advocating it for a “true” Equal Access. I am just like everyone else when I can use text messages and not have to use something different to communicate with which points out how unequal I am.

text messages in australia are 10c-25c each (depending on phone plans) and it only costs to send them, not recieve them. for some areas tet messaging is good because it will get through when you are out of range, whereas if you call someone it will just drop out. personally i hate text messaging as it takes too long to type, but sometimes if you dont want to call someone, or if you just want to send a "hi how are you" to let someone know you havent forgotten them, but dont have the time to get into a full-on conversation with them, they're good. i have a pretty good plan which for $30 gets me 50 free minutes of calls, $30 of calls after that is used up, and 50 free text messages. so i tend to just do whatever suits me or whatever free minutes/texts i have left.
