Craigslist Frugal Living Forum

January 8th, 2008 at 07:34 pm

Ideas about living a life of frugality are abundant and out there in cyberspace. I was browsing through CL to find someone willing to trade some unwanted xmas gift cards. I came upon the frugal living forum and found most of the ideas to be extreme but also very entertaining in uniqueness.

There were some suggestions about hanging clothes out to dry rather using a dryer. There was a discussion on how to collect rain water, but more importantly how to keep rain water clean. There seem to be a a lot of bragging about how short of shower one person can take to save on water. This is where things got a little extreme. One poster said he take his towels and soap to public restrooms in fast food restaurants and wash down with a wet cloth.

One wife talked how she would use the air from deflating an exercise ball to blow dry her hair. Someone asked what happens when the ball is flat? She remarked that she has her husband blow up the exercise ball up manually. I don't know if that meant with a pump or his mouth.

There was a topic on tearing up old tshirts as reuseable tampons. Ewwww...then it moved onto reuseable toilet wipes--I stopped reading.

Yeah i know what you mean. Its good to be frugal but you have to maintain a standard of living.

Yes, I found it interesting that Craigslist had a frugality section. Unfortunately, the forum I saw was inundated with ads, flame wars, and just stuff that are out of topic, to say nothing of bad advices found there.

Maybe it's just as well, seeing as how that site is blocked from work anyway.

*laughs* well, then, i wont tell you about washable female products. we use cloth diapers - mama cloth isnt any big deal here! and its much more comfortable.

family cloth - washable tp - i still cant handle though.

alianora: I use the same washable girly stuff too, and the Diva cup. Which is probably TMI, lol. But it seems cleaner to me, plus so much less wasteful, even though the initial cost was a bit high.

I know of one family that does the washable diapers. If my sister decided to switch to washable diapers, I would have no problems changing my nephew, but the diapers will be her issue to deal with.

I'd never use disposable diapers. All my babies used cloth and no diaper rashes. But, when one was in the hospital for her hip surgery, the hospital tried every kind of disposible ones on her and she had a terrible rash. So, the hospital put her back in cotton ones and the rash was gone in just a few days.

Until recently most of our clothes were dried on a line. I prefer that. But now I go to a laundrymat and use a dryer. Yuck!

My kids all had cloth diapers but we used disposables on outings.

I'm pretty frugal and have no problem with some 'extreme' ideas but some are too much for me, even. I think I read that forum but will check it out again.

    That's extreme.

LOL - washable tp... oddly enough the thought came to my mind earlier (before getting on here) but not as something I would actually do. I've been looking up cloth diapering all day... but yeah, people can take anything too far it seems!

surely you don't take that forum seriously! There is a phenomenon out there in cyberspace, of trolling these CL forums. Since "on the internet no one knows you're a dog", folks either don't register, or hide behind a screen name (read:they don't have to take responsibility for what they post), and post outlandish suggestions.

Really, one has to look at these form critically. Do do otherwise is to be duped.

I think there might be something to this, not just for saving money but for cleanliness also. The bidet is used in Europe and other parts of the world. At a certain point it becomes theoretical in the sense that if everyone did that (cloth toilet paper) how much paper would it save? But you have to also think about the extra fresh water required to wash it, just like cloth diapers. In the long run, cloth diapers are better for the environment.
